Hi, my name is Chris Brosnan. At the time of writing this I am 23 years old and have been a Christian for almost 6 years.
Growing up I was a very self-centred and shy kid with few friends – probably because I acted as though everything revolved around me. I believed in God but that was about as far as it went – my beliefs never really affected the way I lived my life. My Dad was a Catholic; my mother an atheist; and my brother.. well, who knows? He and I would sometimes go along to the local Catholic parish occasionally with Dad, but it seemed so dry and ritualistic. I couldn’t understand it so why should I bother with God if this was what “religion” is all about?
When I was 17 I got a job at a local supermarket where there were a bunch of genuine Christians working there too. I thought that because I went to church (kind-of) and because I tried to be good (sometimes) I was OK. Man, was I ever wrong! I became friends with one of the Christians I worked with who one day tried talking to me about Jesus.
“If you were to stand before God and he was to ask you, ‘Why should I let you into Heaven?’ what would you say?”
“No idea....uh...what would you say?!” I replied.
He told me that God loved me and sent his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to die on the cross to pay for my sins. He explained that, “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Sin is when we break God’s rules as found in the Bible. However, Jesus took the penalty of sin for us. He went through all the suffering of Hell on the cross so we don’t have to. And then he rose again from the grave!
“Jesus took your place on the cross, Chris. Heaven is a gift; the Bible says that if we turn from our sins and believe that Jesus died and rose again to pay for them, then we will be saved! It is not through trying to do good works because only Jesus can take away your ‘bad works.’”
That was the first time I heard the gospel. That night I got down on my knees, told God I was sincerely sorry for my sins and I believed Jesus died and rose again for me. There were no flashing lights or fireworks, but God gave me real peace and joy that night. He has done so many wonderful things in my life since then and will continue to as well.
Do you know Jesus as your personal saviour? Religion and good works don’t cut it. Only Jesus can save you.
