The Believer’s Gift of Prophecy

Is the gift of prophecy relevant for today?

This week Margret Asks, Pastor Jeff..

“If we are supposed to trust the Bible as the completed revelation of God, why is there still a gift of ‘prophecy’ available to the church?”

A – Because the word “prophecy” has more than one meaning!

Are bats birds or mammals?

Bats

Are bats a bird or a mammal

Q. I had a long discussion today with a backpacking skeptic who seemed genuinely interested to talk about why he cannot accept that there is a God as there is no evidence. I spoke of the Bible and he said I must answer just one question. Why does the bible mention bats as birds when they are in fact mammals. Is this a question worth discussing? I think not but to him, it needs an answer. To be honest, the question is barely worth answering – if this is the only thing that is keeping this fellow from getting saved, that’s one thing – but 19 times out of 20, a skeptic in this mode will always have “one more question” that is little more than an excuse to keep them from acting.  -Pauline

A. Short answer – Yes!

The King James Bible does not in fact call bats “birds” – it refers to them as “fowl” – mammals are purely a human designation – this is the same question as how God can call the “great fish” that swallowed Jonah a “whale” when whales are mammals, not fish – the answer is:  says who?  If  the Holy Spirit wants to call whales fish and bats fowl, that is his business. Scientific classification is not flawless (it is often changed and updated) and is  nothing more than man’s attempt to classify his world around him – such a question would be seen as totally absurd if someone complained that God did not use the technical Latin names (genus/species) for all of the animals in the Bible – but in reality these two questions are basically coming from the same viewpoint!

Hope this helps you answer your friend Pauline!

The 144,000 – Who Are They?

Q – “Who are the company of 144,000 mentioned in Revelation 14? Is the number literal or symbolic?”

 (RF in Blenheim)

A –  A literal group of 144,000 Jewish preachers

Stop and think for just a moment.   The next event on God’s prophetic calendar is the supernatural catching away (or Rapture) of every truly born-again believer in Jesus Christ on earth.   This will be followed by roughly seven years of tremendous tribulation on earth and then Jesus will physically return to earth as King and Lord of all.   When all of the Christians are removed, how are people supposed to know what God wants them to do?

God’s answer to this dilemma and the tremendous need to reach every corner of the planet as quickly as possible (remember, there are only 7 years in play before his return!) is to call forth 144,000 men, probably in a manner very similar to that of the Apostle Paul in Acts chapter nine.   The Bible tells us:

  1. That there will be 144,000 men – 12,000 each from the tribes of Israel listed in Rev 7:5-7
  2.  They will initially enjoy God’s supernatural protection as they carry on in their work – Rev 7:3-4
  3. At some point and in some way they all end up in heaven – Rev 14:1-3
  4. They all know a new song that no one else knows – Rev 14:3
  5. They have all been redeemed (ie. saved from their sins – thus they are not angelic or something),
  6.  They are all male virgins who have not defiled themselves with women – Rev 14:4
  7.  They all have God the Father’s name written on their foreheads – Rev 14:1

So much for the historic Jehovah’s Witness claim that the first 144,000 Watchtower converts made up this company (http://www.towerwatch.com/Witnesses/statistics/partakers.htm) !!

The result of the earthly activities is that “a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;  And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.”  (Rev 7:9-10)   These men are the method that God will use during the Tribulation in order that, “this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” (Mat 24:14).

Babies and Baptism. What’s the deal?

Q- Tony asks, “Pastor Jeff, should babies be baptized?  What happens if they die unbaptized? ”

A – The total number of verses in the Bible that speak about baby baptism:  ZERO!

Baptism is one of the most confused and muddled areas of doctrine in all of Christendom simply because everyone trusts their church or tradition and never actually picks up a Bible and reads it!

The first thing we need to establish is that baptism means immersion – in the Bible, the word “baptize” or its forms is used to describe people being immersed in water (Acts 8:38), fire (Matt 3:11), God’s wrath (Matt 20:22), the Holy Spirit (Matt 3:11), and the church or body of Christ itself (I Cor 12:13).  Not once does the word baptize mean, imply or refer to sprinkling – in fact the Bible uses a completely different word from baptism to describe the act of sprinkling (hold on to your seat, this is deep):  SPRINKLE!   In fact, “sprinkle” shows up 69 times in the Bible.

The reason for all of this is pretty obvious – baptism is a picture of death and burial – and if you come back up, it also pictures resurrection.  Immersion in water pictures the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus as well as the death and burial of our “old nature” followed by a resurrection to walk in newness of life. (Rom. 6:1-4)   Sprinkling destroys all the typology and links to the gospel and death of Christ – who ever heard of propping a corpse up against a tree and sprinkling dirt on it?  No, you bury corpses and wait for the resurrection – thus full immersion in water as a picture of this!

This simple reason explains why a Bible believer does not baptize unsaved people or babies – baptism is ONLY for believers!

  1. Water baptism is a command only to believers – Matt 28:19-20
  2. Water baptism by example was only carried out on believers – Acts 8:36-37
  3. Only a believer who has already believed the gospel is in a position to show to anyone who will watch a literal demonstration of the gospel – what took place in the heart (death to self, new life in Christ) is being played out before a crowd down at the river or lake.
  4. Baptism does not impart eternal life and is not part of the gospel (I Cor 1:17) – anyone trusting in their baptism for eternal life is trusting water and their own human efforts instead of trusting Jesus Christ!  (Eph 2:8-9)

Conclusion

Should a baby be christened or sprinkled?  No!  Such action is not commanded, hinted at or shown by example anywhere in the Bible – it is a man-made tradition (Mark 7:13).  Should a baby be baptized by full immersion?  Only if they can meet the conditions of Acts 8:36-37 – which they obviously can not.  What happens if they are not baptized or christened?  Nothing!

4 reasons you don’t recieve the “desires of your heart” – Psalm 37:4

Q – The Bible says in Psalm 37:4, “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”   Why is that I delight myself in the Lord and I don’t get the desires of my heart?”

What’s the “Book of Life” about in Revelation?

Book of life

A reader like you – cryptically named “CT” – asks, Pastor Jeff,

Q – “In Revelation 20, what is the difference between the “book of life” and “the books?”

A – Read on……

This question has a bit of detail to it, so this week we will try to identify the book of life.  The passage you are referring to says, “And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.   And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.”  (Rev 20:11-12)

“The Book of Life”

This book has three names:  1) the book of life – Phil. 4:3;  2)  the Lamb’s book of life – Rev. 21:27; and 3) the book of the living – Psa 69:28.   It is referred to throughout the Bible, so its scope can not be limited to any one particular group of mankind in scripture.

Clearly one must have their name written in this book in order to have eternal life – Rev. 20:15.   Most of the references to this book in scripture are negative – someone who has failed to have their name written in this book.   Both in the Old Testament (prior to Jesus’ death on the cross) and during the Jewish tribulation, references exist to the fact that it is possible to have one’s name blotted out of this book – see Exod 32:33; Rev 3:4-5; Psa 69:27-28.     In the New Testament gospels and church epistles, it is clear that one’s name is written in this book when they trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour for the forgiveness of sin – Luke 10:20; Phil 4:3.

Although I can’t prove it from scripture, it appears possible when looking at all of the relevant passages that everyone’s name may be written in this book upon conception or birth – this is consistent with the Bible truth that all babies are “safe” in Christ – they still have eternal LIFE.   At that age when a child or young person consciously chooses to sin and God holds them accountable for their actions, their name is blotted out – they are now spiritually DEAD and no longer found in the book of LIFE.   When such a person is then confronted with the gospel of Christ and trusts Jesus as Saviour, they receive eternal life (John 3:36) and thus would be written into the book of LIFE.

In the church age it is impossible for one to lose salvation because it is given as a FREE gift without conditions and consisting of ETERNAL life.   But this is not the case prior to Calvary and after the rapture – hence the references to being blotted out of this book BEFORE and AFTER the present church age.

So what about “The Books”?

The passage we have been looking at has been, “And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.   And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.”  (Rev 20:11-12)

We can see that the book of life is a record of all those possessing eternal life.  What are these other “books” that God will judge mankind from?   Scripture identifies two possibilities that are in all likelihood both true:

1)            A written record of your deeds and words.

The context clearly says, “…the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.”   Malachi 3:16 mentions a “book of remembrance” that God is writing.  In the context it will be used at the final judgement to assist in “discern(ing) between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.”   We know that God is keeping track of “the secrets of men” (Rom 2:16) which he will use on judgment day.    Eccl 12:14 tells us that at the final judgment, “God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”   God is not only keeping tabs on your actions, but your words as well!   “…every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”  (Matt 12:36-37)

The issue here is not about your good works outweighing your bad works – this is impossible!   Jesus died on the cross precisely because you could NOT do enough good works to save yourself!   Rather, works and words are being recorded to reward the believers from other ages who stand before God at this judgment and to use as evidence to condemn the unsaved and determine their punishment in hell.   Hell will not equal for all of the lost as some will face “greater damnation” (Matt 23:14)

2)            The Bible.

Yes, God will open his written word on judgment day.  This is the law from which all men will be judged!   “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.”  (John 12:48)

Conclusion?

Friend, you are without excuse!   All that God requires of you is in black and white and can be read today.  Don’t needlessly go to hell when the remedy for your sin and the means to have your record wiped clean today is so simply explained in God’s word!!

Isn’t living together for a few years the same as being married?

wedding rings

Wedding rings are a symbol of commitment

This week, another question from one of our favourite readers, Margret, writes:

Q – “I know the Bible says that people should get married instead of just living together, but if two partners have been in a loving, meaningful and committed relationship for many years, isn’t this essentially the same as marriage in God’s eyes?”

A – No

The road to apostasy and false doctrine begins by adjusting scripture to “fit our situation.”   One of the single greatest factors in the decline of “religion” in New Zealand over the past fifty years has been churches “tweaking the Bible” and making little compromises to accommodate the opinions, actions and whims of society.  Read more »

What’s it mean to Sing and Pray in the Spirit??

This week, Margaret W writes, “Pastor Jeff…

Could you please explain what singing in the spirit and praying in the spirit is all about in I Cor. 14:15?  Is praying in the spirit praying in tongues?

Answer: No!

The verse and passage in question says, “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? (I Cor. 14:14-16)

I Thes. 5:23 says that you are a three part being – body, soul and spirit.  The body is the flesh you presently live in that allows you to operate in this material world – your world-consciousness.  Your soul is composed of your mind, emotions and will and is the “real you” – your self-consciousness.   Your spirit is your God consciousness – that part of you that is dead to God because of sin but is “born again” at salvation when the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of you at salvation.

This is a fascinating question! It really addresses key issues relevant to all Christians today. What are they? Read on to find out more. Read more »

Do People “Left Behind” After The Rapture Get A Second Chance??

The Rapture. Will unbelievers get a second chance?

The Rapture. Will unbelievers get a second chance?

Q. I am reading through the New Defenders Bible and was surprised to see the comments regarding those who were not saved but knew about the gospel at the rapture. I have always thought that Tim La Hayes Left Behind series said it all regarding those who were not saved having a second chance during the tribulation. Would like to hear your thoughts on this.

- Pauline, via email

A. Some truths of scripture are not particularly comforting.   The passage you refer to is probably II Thessalonians 2:11-12 which says:

And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

There are several good reasons to believe that this passage applies to church age unbelievers who missed getting saved before the tribulation.   Read more »
